PFC Salvatore P. Cemelli Memorial Foundation Scholarship Application 2024

General Information

Salvatore P. Cemelli was a dedicated soldier who sacrificed his life in the Vietnam War. This foundation was established in his memory and honor. This year’s scholarship award is in the amount of $1,000, non-renewable, and will be granted to a Weehawken resident, high school senior, attending a college or university full-time in the 2024-2025 school year. The award will be presented to the winning candidate at the Weehawken Memorial Day Ceremonies (May 27, 2024) following the annual parade.

Eligibility

A. Educational requirements: The candidate must be a Weehawken resident, high school senior, who will be a full-time student at a college or university in the 2024-2025 school year.

 

B. Financial need: Financial need will be considered.

 

C. Timeframe: The candidate must pursue his/her course of college study within the academic year of the scholarship grant.

Required Information and Documents

A. Completed 5-part Application Form, printed legibly.

B. Part 4 of the Application Form completed and signed by the candidate’s guidance counselor.

C. One Letter of Recommendation of approximately 200-250 words from a guidance counselor, teacher, coach, organization leader, or employer (cannot be a parent or relative).

D. Official Transcript showing most recent grades and official standardized test scores.

E. One essay of approximately 500 words addressing one of the following prompts:

a. Imagine you are a soldier. Write a letter you would have liked to receive while in service. Keep in mind the importance of their work and sacrifice. Incorporate your understanding of the work of soldiers and their addition to the country. Finally, be creative!

b. After coming out of service, many veterans struggle to obtain jobs and build sustainable lives. In fact, the VA (US Department of Veteran Affairs) reported that there was about a 14% increase in homeless veterans in 2023 versus 2022. What programs would you put in place to improve the quality of life for veterans who come out of service with no secure job or home?

Filing of Applications

A. Application must be completed in its entirety with no components missing. If any requested documentation is missing, the candidate will not be considered for the award.

 

B. All applications are due April 19, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted.

 

C. All components of your completed application must be submitted virtually, by the applicant, to pfcspcfoundation@gmail.com with the subject “2024 Scholarship Application Submission”
